I have always had a love for Music. Ever since I was a little kid, I had a radio with me. I also had a walk man. Yes, I am that old. I used to record songs on tapes from the radio. I would then make up my own break dancing moves in the garage of my family home.

As I got into my teenage years, I spent a lot of time at Bow Wow Records on Central. I was buying CDs. I had books and books of CDs in which I would always be the DJ at any party.

I was involved with a party promoter here in my city. We had a big 2011 New Year’s party with one of my favorite artists, Bitch.

We had planned this party. We arranged all the entertainment before the big headliner. They needed a DJ for the opening 2 hours, so I said I can do it. I downloaded Virtual DJ and just went with it and that was my first gig. Unpaid have you.

It was so exhilarating for the first time, and that ignited my passion for the craft. I started practicing and filling in these lame ass first hour sets for the promoter. They were lame because no one comes to a party at 8. But I still loved it.

I have this love for music that does not parallel any other passion in my life. I love to listen to tracks and hear the beats build and drop. House music is really my preference but sadly I don’t get many opportunities to play that genre much around here. I’m working on that!

One of my favorite genres I loved to learn with were tracks from the artists held on the Naked Label. Naked label started in 1982. In the 2000s, it held some of the most sexy and sultry artists. These artists included Blue Six, Lisa Shaw, Aya, Miguel Migs, and Gaelle. The songs have house beats but amazing vocals and beats. The album covers were sexy and artsy too!

After a few years of doing the dance parties, I started to find my niche. I discovered what I was good at. I saw these meme recently and it nailed it!

Whenever I get ready to go to a gig I get the butterflies, what am I walking into I wonder. I spend time sampling from all the genres to see who hits the floor. I love when they scream upon hearing their favorite song. They come running from the bar. I get the chills all over when I feel the rhythm and the energy from the crowd. I love when they come up to me. They tell me I am the best DJ they have had in a long time. They are all sweaty to prove it.

My next favorite gigs to do are Drag Shows. It is a fun experience being in a group text with 15 drag performers. We spent weeks preparing for their performances, looking for wigs, tape, boobs, bobby pins, you name it. I have been part of some really amazing drag troupes and those performers give it their all! They also don’t send their songs until the last minute. They usually change on the fly. Keep me on my toes!

Now I am the resident DJ for the Albuquerque Hot Flash Parties. The events are organized by a favorite couple of mine, both named Kathy. They put on these parties and donate to local non-profits. They really offer a place for women in Albuquerque to have fun.

I love to do all request nights. Now we have an amazing venue with great sound. It offers an awesome dance floor and food at Revel Albuquerque.

One of the best parts of this job is the people I get to meet. I also enjoy working with some bad ass DJ’s and party promoters. I work Albuquerque Pride Parade every year and countless parties and brunches. I love connecting with my pride community. They count on me to be their DJ! For pride 2023, I got to hang with one of the vocalists from SNAP Thea Austin. She kept calling me DJ Rex. It was cute.
